Story Time: What's Your Song?

One of the most romantic things a guy can do is pick out a song for "us." It's both old-fashioned and official, like he's giving me his varsity jacket or some shit. Every time I hear that song for the rest of my life, I'll think of him. (How sneaky/romantic)

The first time I had a designated song with a guy was with my high school sweetheart and it was "Ruby Soho" by Rancid. It came on when we were in his car one night and he noticed me singing along: "Destination unknown/ Ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby soho."

He pointed at the radio and told me that this was our song from now on. I asked him if he was serious and he nodded yes. Now, every time I hear those opening chords and Tim Armstrong's scratchy growl, I think about holding his hand while he drove me home.

I had a disagreement with a recent ex over "our song." He wanted Cameo's "Word Up!" and I counter-suggested Bloc Party's "So Here We Are." Then, he lobbied for New Edition's "Cool It Now" as our song, but I straight up vetoed that shit. Are you surprised we didn't work out?

What songs do you have with your loves? Leave 'em in the comments.

Coming from the other side of the equation: first song I ever set for a girl was Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence."

We hard our first kiss to it, and to this day, that song tastes like Burt's Bees to me.

Supersuckers "Hungover Together"

If you've never heard this song, you need to. The version off of "Must've Been Live" is the best.

Me an my guy have two unofficial songs that take turns being "the one" Otis Redding's - That's How Strong My Love Is and The Zombie's - This Will Be Our Year. My guy is a secret romantic. ;)

My HS boyfriend appointed Depeche Mode's Somebody as our song. 18 years later, we're back together, engaged, and it's STILL our song.

I posted about this the other day... "I like to introduce girls to new music. I want them to always associate those particular artists with me. That way if the relationship ends badly I know I've ruined good music for them."

"Do What You Do"- Chuck Ragan

We're trying to guess how much he wants to play our wedding. I'm thinking we can barter with whiskey.

I've been trying to get a girl to agree to "Skulls" by the Misfits as our song for a while. No takers yet.

"Out Go the Lights" by Spoon.

My boyfriend and I met at The Soft Pack concert at Johnny Brendas, so you'd think we'd pick a song by them, but nothing of theirs really fit. But we are both huge Spoon fans, so it works for us.
