Things In His House That Make Me Sad: His Lack Of A Recycling Bin

I hope she recycled those cans too
"Where should I put this beer bottle? Where's your recycling bin?" I asked, rooting around his kitchen.

He twisted around in his chair and said, "Oh, yeah. I don't have one. Just toss it in the trashcan." Then, he turned his attention back to the television.

"You don't have a recycling bin? What the fuck? Who doesn't recycle? Do you hate the Earth?" I can't believe he doesn't recycle! It takes like, ZERO effort to put your things in another bag separate from one's trash.

"Honestly, it really doesn't matter in the scheme of things if I recycle, like, the two cans I use during the week, you know? It's not a big deal. Just put it in the trash."

"Wow. I guess you saw Wall-E and said, 'That looks like a pretty rad future for humanity.' Get a recycling bin, dude." I slammed the bottle in the trash so it'd make a loud noise. I wanted to register my discontent here.

Sensing my disapproval, he turned around again. "It doesn't even matter because the homeless men around here are going to pick all the cans out regardless. It's like I'm helping them earn a living in a weird way." Then, he took a long pull from his beer bottle.

"So, your justification is that you're helping the homeless at the expense of the Earth? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Seriously, the dumbest."

Guys who don't have a recycling bin need to get the memo that caring about the Earth is a turn-on. It's a small gesture, but we all gotta do our part. Besides, our city has a recycling program so we might as well take advantage of it, ya know?

Guilty!

In my defense, I've asked for one, but the city keeps bringing me more enormous garbage cans instead. WTF am I supposed to do with three 120-gallon cans? I live alone for chrissakes, I can barely fill one a week! I always feel silly wheeling my can out twice a week when it only has one garbage bag in it =)

So for now I just keep stuff stacked in a box in the garage and periodically dump them off at the recycling center on my way to work.

You should have showed your discontent by boning him silly. It's the only way he'll learn.

So true! I've had multiple fights with boys over this. And others earn lots of points for recycling and being eco-conscious in general.

Penn & Teller did a Bullshit! episode on recycling that was pretty interesting and made some thought-provoking observations. Season 2, Episode 5 -- a quick search on YouTube will bring it up.

That's not to say I stopped recycling because of it. But this provides just an alternative viewpoint on the whole recycling thing. Just playing devil's advocate and all that. Don't be so quick to judge non-recyclers.

I hear what you're saying. I know in reality that personal recycling isn't going to make a huge difference because the biggest culprits for environmental damage are on a much larger scale, but it's more the sentiment of "why bother?" that grates on me.

This reminds me of the disagreement my girlfriend and I always have, where she gets mad at me for being skeptical about recycling and I get mad at her for leaving lights turned on in rooms she isn't using for hours at a time.

Oh, I always turn off as much electricity as I can when I leave a room. My dad drilled that into me.

He has a point about helping out the hobos though. I don't recycle cause I have *literally* no room for a recycling bin. But I do put my beer bottles back in their caddies and out in front of the dumpsters we have. It saves them on rifling tearing my bags apart, they make some cash, and it all gets recycled anyway. So whatevs.

As much as I hate to say this, recycling is actually worse for the environment. Speaking as a fellow environmentalist, with the amount of energy it takes to fuel a recycling factory, the act of recycling is completely counterproductive.
