Another Satisfied Customer: A Mix Tape Speed Dating Testimony

Imagine my delight when I received this letter in my inbox this morning:
Anna,
I just wanna let you know that since the night of October 8, when I reluctantly attended your mix tape speed dating party, I've been hanging out with the same guy that I met at your event.
After two years of bad dates and crappy short term relationships with men with egos the size of China, I have finally met a decent, kind, attractive man who has a huge heart. Who knew all I had to do was attend mix tape speed dating??? I hope you continue these events for other single people in town who have exhausted all of the rotten options in their own social circles. I owe you big time, Anna!!!!

kisses,
Jennifer
How rad is that? I TOLD you we brought some love to the city. We've taken a break from our mix tape speed dating parties for now, but we're considering starting them up again in the new year. My question: are people still interested in it? I was thinking about doing a Brit-pop night, a Wes Anderson night, a power ballad night, and maybe another '90s alternative night. I'm pretty much open to anything. If we were to do it again, would you come? What would you want to listen to if you did participate? Drop a line to me at anna@shmittenkitten.com or leave a message in the comments and let me know what you're thinking.

Come As You Are: Mix Tape Speed Dating Goes Grunge

Holy flannel shirt! We're having our next Mix Tape Speed Dating party tomorrow at the Khyber. It's the last one in our series of four and we're goin' grunge, baby. We're gonna dress our heroin chic-iest. Maybe sip some coffee. Maybe mope around and write a nasty word on our arm in magic marker to subvert its meaning. Who knows? You'll have to come and see.

Sign in is at 6:30pm and it starts at 7pm. It's $5 if you pre-register, $8 if you don't. FAQs are here. Let's do it to it! (By "do it," we mean speed date and by "to it" we mean with other nice, good-looking citizens.) Click on the image below to register:

Oh, and it's free to just come, hang out and listen to music. No big whoop.

Pics and Vids: Mix Tape Speed Dating, The Movie

Here is a video our buddy Neal Santos made for the City Paper about our party last night. That's our beautiful writer Lora explaining how the party will go down. We had a blast and I think we created a bit of love in the city. Thanks to everyone who came out. Thanks to Dani and the fine people at Dos Segundos for being so accomodating. Thanks to Lora, Jon, and Alexis at Popped! for organizing it. And, thanks to me for playing such awesome music!

Speed Dating To To Two Cherry Cokes

Tomorrow, we are hosting our second Mix Tape Speed Dating party at Dos Segundos. Sign-in is at 6:30pm, the first round starts at 7pm and it goes until 9pm. Click here for an entire overview as I answer some FAQs. Feel free to come earlier and jump in on some happy hour specials.

The theme of the night is '90s emo/pop-punk and I have to say that this party is one of the ones I'm most excited about. I grew up on this stuff. I interviewed some of these bands for my zine, I blasted them from my car stereo, I put them on mix tapes for boys I had crushes on; they were in my teenage blood. Avail, Lifetime, Bouncing Souls, Jawbreaker, Jimmy Eat World, Plow United, Weston, Rancid, Rainer Maria, Joan of Arc, Screeching Weasel, Hot Water Music, Sunny Day Real Estate, Get Up Kids, Saves the Day, The Promise Ring, Less Than Jake; all of these bands (and more) will be played. If I was a dj, without a doubt these would be the bands I'd play on my night. If you're a fan of this stuff, please come out. It's gonna be radical. Click on the image below to sign up.

ALSO, due to popular demand, our next mix tape speed party taking place on Thursday, October 8th has been moved from the Cantina to the Khyber. We are gonna play '90s indie rock for that one. Sweet! Mark yer calendars.

Little Known Fact: I Can Type And Apply Mascara At The Same Time

As anyone who has glanced at this site briefly for the past few weeks should know, tonight is our first Mix Tape Speed Dating party. A huge thanks to everyone that's pre-registered and offered their suggestions for songs.

Big ups to the Weekly and the City Paper for giving us love. Thanks to everyone that's emailed and tweeted and facebooked about it. We really appreciate it!

If you are around, stop by the Khyber around 7pm tonight to see what the fuss is about. The first round starts at 7:45pm and we go til about 9:30pm. It's free to hang out, it only costs money to participate. You have any questions about it, refer to the FAQs. If you can't make it tonight, don't sweat it because we'll be throwing three more.

Ok. I have my favorite dress on and I have my iPod loaded up with your favorite '90s Alternative jamz (whatever that means). Apparently, I can NOT put on tights and type at the same time so I have to scoot. Hope to see y'all tonight!

Shmitten Kitten & Popped! Present Mix Tape Speed Dating Parties

We have partnered up with the fine people at Popped! and we are very proud to announce that we will be throwing four Mix Tape Speed Dating parties this fall at some of the best bars and restaurants around Philadelphia. If you had floppy '90s hair while you listened to it, we're gonna speed date to it.

Here's how it works: when you pre-register, you can suggest songs to play on the night you will attend. So, in effect, we will create a mix tape of all of the songs that you want to hear in the given genre of the night. Have you always wanted to speed date to Braid? or Jawbreaker? Or Superchunk? Make it happen! At the very least, you'll get the chance to meet people who have similar tastes in music, which is rad.

All of the parties start at 7pm. Speed dating starts at 8pm SHARP. Here is the schedule:

Dates and Venues:
Thursday, September 10th - Khyber
Soundtrack: '90s Alternative
i.e. Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Weezer, etc.

Thursday, September 24th - Dos Segundos
Soundtrack: '90s Emo/Pop Punk
i.e. Get Up Kids, Promise Ring, Lifetime, Avail, Jawbreaker, Braid, Fugazi, Descendents, Rainer Maria, etc.

Thursday, October 8th - The Cantina
Soundtrack: '90s Indie
i.e. Superchunk, Pavement, Stone Roses, Guided by Voices, PJ Harvey, My Bloody Valentine, Superdrag, etc.

Thursday, October 22nd - Royal Tavern
Soundtrack: '90s Grunge
Like you don't know what grunge is! Let's just say that the Singles soundtrack WILL make an appearance.

When:
7pm - 9pm.
There will be drink specials and speed dating starts at 8pm sharp!

Cost:
$5 if you pre-register. $8 if you don't.
All money will be due at the event and it's cash only.

Why pre-register?
Your pre-registration will be good for one free drink at the event. Yup, it costs $5 to attend and your first drink is on us. Pretty sweet, right? And, one lucky couple will win a gift certificate to Cantina too. You could meet the person of your dreams AND have your first date on us. That's just swell.

Please join us. It's gonna be soooo insanely fun. Well, as much fun as quickly meeting a bunch of strangers who share a penchant for Pavement can be.

Mix Tape Speed Dating FAQs

For those of you who are curious about how it's all going to go down, here's the deal:

So, what's this mix tape speed dating thing about?
Basically, you pre-register on ShmittenKitten.com and suggest songs for the night you want to attend. Then, we speed date to the songs you guys picked. So far, we have four nights planned, at Khyber on 9/10, at Dos Segundos on 9/24, at the Khyber again on 10/8 (this is moved from the previous location, the Cantina), and at Royal Tavern on 10/22. If they go well and people have a good time, we'll do some more.

Sign-in starts at 6:30pm. The first round starts at 7:00pm. Pre-registration guarantees you a both a cheaper ticket price and the chance to submit songs.

When you sign-in, you will receive:
  1. a name tag listing your assigned speed dating round and position number
  2. a booklet listing the times each round will take place and space for you to write notes about the people you will meet
  3. an entry form you need to return to us with your favorite match listed on it. Matches will be eligible to win two grand prize gift certificates to Cantina.
We will provide ice breaker questions too in case you need help sparking up conversations. And, we will provide markers to use, but if you wanna bring your own pen, thatd be cool. Also, bring business cards if you have 'em as it will make it easier to exchange information.

There are two rounds: each round has about ten guys and ten girls. We might do 12 or 15 of each, depending on the turnout. They'll talk to each other for the length of a song until everyone has met. Then, we'll do it again with another batch of people! It's like musical chairs. Kinda.

At the end of the night, fill out your card and tell us who you'd like to go on a date with of the people that you met that night. Both people must list each other to be eligible for the grand prize. Of the people who match up, two couples will win a $25 gift certificate to Cantina. We'll notify the other matches by email within 24 hours. The gift certificate winners will be notified at the end of the event so be sure to stick around. We also have a few door prizes as well.

*Oh, and boys, feel totally free to list me, Anna, as your match if you want to go out with me. I'm the wildcard, bitches!

Who is gonna MC it?
Again, me, Anna! When I get nervous, I tend to crack a lot of jokes so I'm sure it'll be entertaining.

Who is going?
According to our pre-registration stats, almost everyone going is in their 20s and early 30s. Attendees have a mix of creative and professional jobs; graphic designers, writers, teachers, etc., they're all coming. So far, about 55% are women, and 45% are guys. We still could use a few more dudes, so if you have any single guy friends, encourage them to come.

How much will it cost and what should I wear?
It is free to attend. It only costs money to participate in the speed dating. It's $5 if you pre-register, and $8 if you don't. Everyone who pays is entitled to one drink ticket good for either a beer or a well drink. Just try and look nice. I'll probably wear a dress, but I like to overdress sometimes. That's my thing. Guys who look nice and smell good get more attention. Just sayin'. Girls, I'm sure you'll look cute no matter what.

Can I bring my friend who isn't going to speed date?
Sure, if your friend is single, as this is an event expressly for singles. If you want to bring your friend either as moral support or because she is curious to see what it'll be like, you are welcome to bring her. Who knows? Maybe she'll get such a kick out of it that she'll want to sign up for the next one. However, if she's not participating, she's not eligible for the Cantina gift certificate prize.

What if I really like someone but am too shy/overwhelmed to make a move during the party?
If you really hit it off with someone but aren't sure how to approach them, you can email me, Anna [anna@shmittenkitten.com] afterwards and I'll try to play matchmaker. No promises, but it's worth a shot. But really, this is a mixer. Don't feel weird about approaching someone you like. Just slam a drink and do it!

Anything else?
If you need anything or have any questions, please feel free to contact me at anna@shmittenkitten.com. Really, just have fun with it. It's gonna be a blast.
